Stage 2 builds on the Stage 1 foundations with richer grammar, sharper spelling, and structured writing in every major text type. It comes in two books, one for Grade 3 and one for Grade 4. Together they have 294 pages and 147 lessons.

Each lesson is labelled by skill (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Spelling or Punctuation). Each book opens with a skills review, then moves into new content, and ends with a “My Best Work” lesson where learners showcase what they’ve mastered.

Grade 3: Building Writers

  • Grammar: clauses (main, subordinate and relative), complex sentences, subordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials and sentence types

  • Spelling and vocabulary: prefixes and suffixes, root words and word families, silent letters, homophones, vowel patterns and commonly misspelled words

  • Narrative writing: story structure, characters, settings, dialogue, and drafting, editing and publishing a final story

  • Information and persuasive writing: topic sentences, body paragraphs, note-taking, persuasive paragraphs, and subjective and objective language

  • Reading and poetry: inferring, comprehension strategies, simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, and reading and writing poems

Grade 4: Sharpening Skills

  • Grammar: adverb and prepositional phrases, subject-verb agreement, modal verbs, expanded noun groups, pronouns, determiners, and conditional connectives

  • Spelling and word study: Greek and Latin roots, word origins, -ible/-able and -ance/-ence endings, and irregular spelling patterns

  • Narrative craft: show don’t tell, building tension, writing dialogue and reported speech, and peer editing

  • Information and persuasive writing: multi-paragraph texts, strong introductions, paragraphs that flow, formal and informal language, and oral presentations

  • Critical reading: summarising, identifying themes, comparing texts, considering other points of view, and how authors choose their words
