Stage 1 takes young learners from tracing their first letters to writing stories, letters and poems. It comes in two books, one for Grade 1 and one for Grade 2. Together they have 229 pages and 157 lessons, so there’s a full year of structured learning for each grade.
Every lesson is clearly labelled by skill (Spelling, Grammar, Reading, Writing or Punctuation). Each follows the same simple pattern: a short, child-friendly explanation, then hands-on activities.
Grade 1: Building the Foundations
102 pages | 78 lessons
Grade 1 gives children a strong start in reading and writing:
Letters and spelling: alphabet tracing, uppercase and lowercase letters, alphabetical order, vowels and consonants
Phonics: short vowel sounds, word families (-at, -an, -ap, -in, -it and more), blends (bl, cl, fl, br, cr, dr, tr) and digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh)
Grammar: naming, doing and describing words, plurals and the articles “a” and “an”
Sentences and punctuation: what makes a sentence, capital letters, full stops, question marks and fixing sentences
Writing: simple sentences, expanding sentences with describing words, linking two sentences and building short stories
Everyday skills: numbers, colours, months and writing the date, syllables, sequencing events and comprehension
Grade 2: Growing Confident Writers
127 pages | 79 lessons
Grade 2 builds on that foundation and introduces the real grammar terms:
Grammar: nouns, verbs and adjectives, past and present tense, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and comparative and superlative adjectives
Spelling and vocabulary: long vowel patterns, silent e, prefixes and suffixes, compound words, homophones, synonyms and antonyms, and dictionary skills
Punctuation: apostrophes for contractions, commas in lists and speech marks
Reading: stories with comprehension questions, dialogue, information text features, persuasive texts and character traits and feelings
Writing: compound sentences, recounts, letter writing, information reports, persuasive writing, narrative writing (planning, drafting, editing and proofreading), rhyme and poetry
